Yes, it does work on 8.5x11, the only difference is that an A4 folded in half is self-similar, which means that the sizes don't get weird on later iterations. That makes A4 a really minor aesthetic upgrade, but it definitely doesn't break the game in any meaningful way. (Someone smarter than me might work out something with surface area and writing space over time, but the difference isn't huge)

This game was so fun! Got a little teary eyed at the end there with my piece that produced little scraps of well loved, originally tacky kilt.
Works on an 8.5 x 11 inch slice of paper quite well.
